Professor Abigail Woods, Professor of the History of Human and Animal Health, Head of the Department of History, Kings College, London, is to give the above lecture on ‘Animals and Medicine in the Long 19th Century’.
The period 1800-1920 saw animals transformed physically, conceptually, and in their lived relations with humans. Meanwhile, medicine underwent transformations of its own, resulting in changes to the relationships between animals and medicine. This paper will explore these changes by tracing the multifaceted roles played by animals in medicine, and the connected development of a dedicated medicine of animals. It seeks to challenge existing human-centred understandings of 19th century medicine by revealing its surprisingly zoological character.
