Many bacterial infections are hard to treat and tend to relapse, due to the presence of persister cells. The internalisation of Salmonella by macrophages induces formation of such non-growing persisters that, in contrast to bacterial persisters formed in laboratory medium, remain in a metabolically-active state. We will discuss how persisters are formed, regrow and survive during extended periods of time in the host.
