Ba é Tomás Ó Máille (1880-1938) an chéad Ollamh le Gaeilge i gColáiste na hOllscoile Gaillimh. Saolaíodh an Máilleach do theaghlach rathúil i nGleann an Mháma i gConamara in 1880. Oileadh é i mBaile Átha Cliath, Manchain, Learpholl, Baden, Beirlín, agus Freiburg, áit ar bronnadh dochtúireacht air. Bhí baint aige le colún reatha Iarthar Chonamara, agus bhí a dheartháir Pádraic (1876–1946) sa chéad Dáil. Aithnítear go bhfuil oidhreacht spleodrach Uí Mháille ar chomhchéim le hoidhreacht a chomhghuallaithe i gCogadh na Saoirse, na h-intleachtóirí radacacha agus ceannairí an chultúir agus na polaitíochta, ina measc a chara Pádraig Mac Piarais agus na fir léinn Tomás Mac Donncha agus Éamon de Valera. Ba ceannródaí é an Máilleach ar mhórán bealaí, mar bhailitheoir béaloidis agus amhrán, mar eagarthóir nuachtán, teangeolaí agus oide. Is suntasach go háirithe mar a dhírigh sé ar nua-theicneolaíocht a linne fhéin – an taifeadadh fuaime. Chruthaigh sé na céadta taifeadadh fuaime de chainteoirí Gaeilge as Connacht agus as an gClár, agus chuidigh le bailitheoirí agus scoláirí eile taifeadtaí a dhéanamh. Agus sinn ag ceiliúradh oidhreacht luachmhar Uí Mháille, léiríonn an taispeántas seo na bunphrionsabail a threoraigh a shaothar – an cothromas cultúrtha agus cúram an tsaoránaigh – ar a bhfuil buaine na dteangacha mionlaithe go domhanda ag brath.
Culture & Citizenship: Tomás Ó Máille
Tomás Ó Máille (1880-1938) was the inaugural Professor of Irish at University College Galway. Born in 1880 in the Maam Valley in Connemara into a prosperous, Irish-speaking family, Tomás trained in Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool, Baden, Berlin, and Freiburg where he was awarded his doctorate in 1909. He was associated with the West Connemara flying column, and his brother Pádraic (1876–1946) was a member of the first Dáil. Belonging to the coterie of radical intellectuals and political and cultural leaders of the War of Independence, Ó Máille’s achievements are rightly considered alongside those of his fellow revolutionaries, his friend Patrick Pearse and fellow academics Thomas McDonagh and Éamon de Valera. A folklore and song collector, newspaper editor, linguist, and teacher, Ó Máille was in a pioneer in many ways. His greatest foresight was his commitment to the newest technology of his day – audio recording. From 1928, he created hundreds of recordings of Irish speakers from Connacht and Clare, and assisted the recording work of other collectors and scholars. In celebrating Ó Máille’s outstanding legacy, this exhibition shares his message of cultural equity and active citizenship, principles that are hugely significant for minoritized languages all over the world.
