To mark International Women’s day this event celebrates women who continue to make a significant impact on law and social justice locally, nationally and internationally.
Join the Liverpool Law School who will be hosting a talk with Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC, Chantelle Lunt and Afrah Qassim.
Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC
Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC is a leading human rights and civil liberties barrister based at Doughty Street Chambers. She has represented survivors of the Hillsborough disaster and the 7/7 bombings and has particular expertise in women’s rights and children’s rights. She has appeared numerous times before the Supreme Court to challenge austerity and welfare cuts on the basis of their disproportionate impact upon women, particularly BAME women and victims of domestic violence. She has also acted in a series of cases concerning the almost total ban on abortion in Northern Ireland. In 2016 Caoilfhionn was named by the Irish Times as one of the 100 most influential Irishwomen living outside Ireland.
Chantelle Lunt
Chantelle Lunt is a writer, lecturer, PhD researcher and activist. She has a professional background in Public Services, including her work in policing and children’s social care. She is the Chair of Merseyside Alliance for Racial Equality CIC (MARE), a non-profit organisation committed to promoting racial equality across Merseyside, through grassroots community-led work. Chantelle rites poetry, screen plays and articles, she was successfully shortlisted for the BBC Writersroom screenwriter development programme and is developing the script that emerged from the programme, exploring misogynoir in policing. Chantelle is also a Labour Town Councillor for Halewood North ward, she is the first Black Woman elected to this position.
Afrah Qassim
Afrah is the Founder and CEO of Savera UK, a leading national charity working to end 'honour'-based abuse and harmful practices including female genital mutilation, forced marriage, virginity testing, breast ironing and conversion therapy. ‘Savera’ means ‘new beginning’ in Hindi, which is what the charity provides for survivors/those at risk, regardless of age, culture, sexuality, gender, or ethnicity.
Afrah also holds the voluntary role of Chair of Liverpool Arab Arts Festival (LAAF), the UK’s longest-running annual Arab arts and culture festival. This position allows her to celebrate her own culture, alongside separating it from the forms of abuse that Savera UK works to end.
